Free Wills Month

Your Will: Helping Great Charities

Free Wills Month

Free Wills Month has partnered with the RNLI to offer members of the public aged 55 and over the opportunity to have their simple Wills written or updated free of charge by using participating solicitors in selected locations across the Republic of Ireland.

An up to date Will written by a solicitor ensures your wishes are respected. It also avoids difficult decisions and legal complications for your loved ones. Free Wills Month allows you to provide for family and friends and leave a gift to your chosen charities too.

A gift in your Will costs you nothing now but can make a difference for years to come.

The charities behind Free Wills Month

The RNLI are supporting this Free Wills Month. Their volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour rescue service in Ireland and the UK.

The RNLI depends on legacies for more than half of its income – with six out of every ten lifeboat launches only being made possible by the gifts left in Wills by people like you.

It looks like you haven't chosen a preferred charity. Unsure? That's ok, you can always decide later and you will be under no obligation at any stage to leave a gift. However, please bear in mind that it is these charities that will be paying for your Will to be written and they depend on the generous support of people like you. Any gift, however small, will help them continue their amazing work.

Now that you've hopefully selected a nearby solicitor and made an appointment it would be worth requesting a Will planner from them before your meeting. This will help you think through some of the aspects of writing a Will and it will enable the solicitor to help you more effectively.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How does the campaign work?

Members of the public aged 55 and over contact one of the firms of solicitors taking part in a Free Wills Month campaign during the designated month to request an appointment.

The solicitor will help to draw up a Will that accurately reflects the wishes of the individual or couple. Those taking up the offer are under no obligation to leave a gift to one of the Free Wills Month charities, however, we earnestly hope that many will see this as a chance to help their favourite cause.

Appointments are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis. Once all available appointments are booked the campaign will close, this may be before the end of the campaigning month.

Are law firms offering remote appointments?

Law firms like many other businesses have had to adapt and follow the latest government advice. Each law firm will have an option or options available to make sure you feel safe and comfortable during the Will writing process - this is a combination of using meeting spaces large enough to socially distance, video calls and phone calls.

Speak to your chosen firm to find out about their particular offering.

Who is the campaign open to?

Free Wills Month is intended for individuals or couples aged 55 and over. In the case of couples making ‘mirror’ Wills, it is sufficient that one has reached the age of 55.

Do the charities get a copy of each Will?

No. The only documentation that is sent on to us is the confidential declaration form which asks questions such as where people heard of the campaign, their age and whether or not they have left a gift to one or more of the Free Wills Month charities.

What happens if a Will is complicated?

We have agreed that the campaign will cover the writing of ‘simple’ Wills. If your Will needs some more work, the solicitor may ask you to pay the balance yourself, however, most people only require simple Wills.

I'm a solicitor. How can I get involved?

You can find out more about how to get involved as a solicitor in the Free Wills Month campaign by visiting this page.

    Who operates Free Wills Month?

Free Wills Month is organised and operated by Capacity Marketing for Charities, who act on behalf of the Free Wills Month charities. The data you submit on the Free Wills Month website is managed by Capacity, and you can read about how it is used and stored here.
